Most of us probably don’t wash our bras as often as we should. Sometimes it’s easier just to wear them over and over again. Maybe you’re scared of shrinking your bras in the dryer, or maybe (like me) you’re just feeling a bit lazy.

If you have questions about how to wash your bras without shrinking them from a C to an A cup, read on and get that cold water ready: here are two effective ways to wash your bras without damaging them.

How To Hand Wash Bras

This is the most gentle way to wash your bras––preferable when you have the time. If you’re in a quick pinch and need to machine wash your bras, we’ll dive into that later. Here, though, we’ll break down the steps to hand-washing your delicates.

1. Fill Sink with Warm Water

To hand-wash your intimates, completely fill your sink with warm water and stir in mild detergent (approximately a tablespoon).

2. Submerge Your Bras

Next, submerge your dirty bras in the soapy water, stirring them around for about a minute to make sure they absorb the detergent. Then, let them sit in the water for 15 minutes

3. Drain Dirty Water

After the time has passed, completely drain the soapy water and refill the sink with clean water. Swirl the bras around, making sure the detergent is completely washed out. However, be gentle! Don’t stretch and prod the fabric too much, as this can do permanent damage to your garments.

4. Air Dry

Finally, remove the bras from the water and shake out as much water as you can while still being gentle. Let them air dry until they’re wearable. Even though it might take a while, air drying is much easier on your bras; using the dryer can cause your bras to shrink and become misshapen.

How to Wash Bras in The Washing Machine

Despite popular belief, a lot of bras can go in the washing machine. All you need to protect them is a lingerie bag, which is usually a mesh sack designed to keep your bras safe during the cycle. Check out this one on Amazon if you’re in the market for one.

1. Hook Your Bras in the Back

First, simply hook your bras before washing to keep the hooks from snagging on any other clothes and pulling threads.

2. Put Them in Lingerie Bag

Next, place them in your laundry bag, tying or zipping it shut and throwing it in the washing machine with the rest of your clothes. We recommend washing them with other light clothing so they don’t take too much of a beating.

3. Use Delicate Cycle

Always make sure your washer setting is on “delicates” or “cold water cycle” as heat can distort the shape of your bra. It’s always best to use a mild detergent when you’re washing intimates.

4. Air Dry

After the cycle has finished, DO NOT put your bras in the dryer. Instead, let them air dry until they’re comfortable to wear.

How Often Should You Wash Your Bras?

Technically, it’s best to wash your bras after 2-3 wears to prevent any odor. However, it really depends on what type of weather you’re wearing these garments in.

If you’re not getting super sweaty, it’s ok to go a few days longer. If you’re wearing in intense heat and humidity, consider throwing in your wash cycle after each wear.

The Bottom Line

All and all, it’s sometimes hard to get motivated to wash your bras. However, if you don’t have time to hand wash, know that the washing machine (along with your handy lingerie bag) is a great option as well! With these steps, say goodbye to stretched or shrunken intimates.
