Space buns are one of 2022’s most popular hairstyle trends, making waves in fashion and bringing the 90s back, but with a twist.

Current celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo and Zendaya are rocking these space buns like their predecessors, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, and many more.

But how do you style them, right? We created a step-by-step process on how to do space buns that never fails.

How To Do Space Buns

Step 1: Brush Your Hair

Whether you are going for a messy look or a clean one, you have to brush your hair back.

For a clean look, make sure your hair is washed, dried, and brushed so that it is tangle-free.

For a messy look, don’t wash your hair for a few days, and don’t brush out the tangles before styling the space buns.

After you are ready to start, brush your hair back so it will be easier to part and tie up your hair in the back.

Step 2: Part Your Hair

Use a comb or brush to split your hair into two equal sections down the middle. Make sure your part is straight, and the same amount of hair is on each side.

Step 3: Tie Up Your Hair

Gather all of one section of your hair and tie it up into a ponytail at the top of your head towards the back.

For a clean look, make sure you smooth out the bumps during the process and brush it accordingly.

For a super trendy 90’s look, leave out a strand of hair on each side of the front of your head to frame your face.

Do the same process with the other side and tie them evenly in the same spot on opposite sides to avoid lopsided buns.

Step 4: Make Your Buns

Wrap your hair around the base of your ponytail in a spiral motion.

You can also twist your hair first to give it an easier spiral. Then tie another hair tie catching the end of your hair at the base of the ponytail. Make sure the hair tie does not compress the bun in any way.

If you need more support, you can secure the bun with bobby pins that match your hair color.

Repeat on the other side.

Step 5: Style Your Space Buns

For extra hold, you can spray your buns with hairspray, and to make it fun, use sparkle or colored sprays. Try L’Oréal Paris Colorista 1-Day Hair Color Spray or Eva Nyc Kweeen glitter spray.

If you want your space buns to stand out from the crowd at a festival or concert, sprinkle some sparkles along with your roots before applying hairspray.

These extra add-ons will surely give you that out-of-this-world look and help color coordinate your outfit.

To Wrap It Up

Space Buns are here to stay for a while. If you’re going to a concert, festival, or just out with friends to a club or bar, you can’t go wrong with this simple but trendy look.
